Great screen - but with some warning!

Review Date: August 29, 2010
Reviewer: Ben,
Firstly, despite the issues I have had - this is a good screen for the money. My main use for it is as a computer monitor, but I also wanted something which I can use as a television later down the line.

I purchased this about 4 or 5 months ago now. The picture quality is great for my general day-to-day computing, DVD playback and occassional gaming. My main computer is hooked up via HDMI, so I get a nice, crisp 1368x768 resolution. The look is very sleek (even if the gloss black is a finger-print magnet!) and will look great in any home-office or bedroom.

The only real issue I have had is when I use the VGA port.

I run a computer repair business, and the majority of desktop computers coming in require VGA. For some bizarre reason, if the computer with VGA turns off when it is connected to the screen (also on the VGA channel) - the screen turns off. Not just as you would expect - it kind of crashes completely.

You can't turn it on again via the buttons - they are all locked out. You have to get up, reach behind your screen, yank out the power cable, wait 5 seconds, plug it in again - and hey presto. And then you have make sure you get it off the VGA channel quickly before the whole process starts again. When your working on multiple computers this doesn't get half annoying.

Strangely enough I can't find this problem reported anywhere, so it may just be an isolated incident. I keep meaning to give Samsung a ring but my main worry is I need this monitor to run my business. If it needs to go in for repair/replacement any longer than a few hours my business will suffer! If it wasn't for this issue, I would be giving it 5 stars, not 4.

As for the "tinny sound" some people have reported...in all honesty what do you expect? Would you buy a washing machine to cook your dinner? No, exactly - don't be daft. For what it's worth go out and buy some proper speakers if you want good quality sound. Buy the screen for what it's main job is - to display picture. At the end of the day your not going to get good speakers on a FLAT screen TV are you?

All in all it is a good screen - just beware of the VGA issue (if anyone else has experienced this problem PLEASE share it!)
